Project SAUNAH
Aquaponics for university learning and community outreach

Learning by building, growing and observing
Developed with the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), Aquaponics Costa del Sol and Aquaponics United, SAUNAH brings fish, plants and practical learning together. The project created a working aquaponic installation for university training, applied research and knowledge exchange with the wider community.
The initial proposal used the UNI design as its starting point. The installation was subsequently adapted to the available resources and built on a smaller scale as SAUNAH, retaining its educational purpose and the opportunity to explore sustainable food production through hands-on experience.
From preparing the site and assembling tanks and pipework to planting and monitoring the water, the project connected technical knowledge with everyday operation. Its combination of media beds and floating rafts offers different ways to observe plant growth, nutrient use and the relationship between fish, beneficial bacteria and plants.
A living learning resource
Practical skills
Understanding components, following the water circuit and learning how to care for fish and crops.
Observation and research
An accessible setting for water-quality checks, crop observations and student projects.
University and community
Sharing experience and exploring the role of aquaponics in local food production and food security.
From the first components to a growing system
A selection of moments from construction, training and the system’s development.
